Overview & Biomechanical Rationale

The knee joint relies on dynamic muscle stabilization provided primarily by the quadriceps (knee extensors) and hamstrings (knee flexors). Isokinetic knee testing allows clinicians to isolate dynamic torque production across controlled angular velocities (e.g. 60°/s, 180°/s, 240°/s, 300°/s) without the confounding variables of compensatory body momentum.

Quadriceps & Hamstring Assessment Protocols

Quadriceps Extensor Profiling

Evaluates rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius torque output. Peak torque normalized to body weight (Nm/kg) provides the benchmark for patellofemoral stability and deceleration capacity.

Hamstring Flexor Profiling

Evaluates biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus torque. Concentric and eccentric hamstring capacity is essential for preventing strain injuries during high-speed sprinting.

Normative Values & Key Ratios

  • Concentric Quadriceps Peak Torque (60°/s): Male athletes: 2.8–3.5 Nm/kg; Female athletes: 2.2–2.8 Nm/kg.
  • Conventional H:Q Ratio (60°/s): 60% to 70% ($0.60–0.70$).
  • Limb Symmetry Index (LSI): Target >90% bilateral symmetry before initiating high-impact sporting tasks.
